It's interesting this announcement comes so soon on the heels of the Time Warner deal. One of the synergies we see between AOL and Time Warner is TW giving AOL access to their cable.

The (AT&T) deal means that the cable systems will only be getting more and more valuable. Time Warner has the highest quality (cable) plant, and operates in the best demographic markets.

Think of the cable system. You as a consumer have no control over what channels the cable operator picks. They pick certain channels based on where they have a financial interest. Time Warner favors the programming in which it has financial interest. We're concerned that the cable model will essentially be grafted onto the InterNet.

...With respect to Time Warner cable systems, no preference will be show for affiliated services, soon-to-be AOL, as opposed to unaffiliated services, ... I would also say to you that there is no intention of flipping the coin, that the wonderfully diverse material coming from Time Warner will exclusively be coming through AOL.

Up until recently AOL was not a big believer in broadband. They didn't have the cable access. Now, with Time Warner, they have access to all the cable outlets.

AOL's best place is still inside of Time Warner. If Time Warner can make AOL work and keep it profitable, they've got a platform that can be powerful for promoting all their other media properties. I think Time Warner would rather not turn over full ownership of AOL. They're just looking for other opportunities.
