There's an opportunity that exists in the original, made-for-cable series space, and it seems to us that cable networks are hungry for programming. Think of the cable system. You as a consumer have no control over what channels the cable operator picks. They pick certain channels based on where they have a financial interest. Time Warner favors the programming in which it has financial interest. We're concerned that the cable model will essentially be grafted onto the InterNet.

Consumers should praise FCC Chairman Kevin Martin and Senator John McCain for striking at the heart of the cable industry's flawed pricing scheme which forces consumers to buy packages of television channels they don't want and shouldn't have to pay for. Today's action kick starts the national effort to give consumers' wallets a break and allow them more control over their television programming choices and cable bills.

The current regulatory regime has enabled cable companies to become virtual monopolies, denying millions of consumers a choice in the marketplace. The result has been increased prices and the suppressed access to new and innovative technologies for consumers. It is time to open the video services market to more competition.

For AT&T's part, we will be happy to offer a-la-carte programming as long as we are able to obtain access to the programming in that manner. As we enter the video market, it is our goal to deliver more choices to our customers when they want it, in the way they want it.

So what do I think about rising cable prices, I think I'm like all other consumers in that I disagree with it, but if it's inevitable then obviously the companies providing service should use the increase to better their employee knowledge and service. [Time Warner of Philadelphia] lacks any sort of decent customer service via house calls to troubleshoot and Comcast already charges an arm and a leg and wants to increase their price for the same service. Not cool.

Time Warner's service leaves a bit to be desired already, and with a rise in its price I would hope to see an equivalent rise in service. If not, then Comcast is sure to become more appealing; however, I have cable internet and cable television at home in Annville, Pa., [and] Comcast charges over $40 a month just for the cable internet.

The winners will be Texas consumers who will get more choices in their cable television service, and access to new innovations in telecommunications,
