The Single Business Tax ordsprog

The Single Business Tax is one of the worst taxes in the nation. We applaud the legislature for their work on this bill, and we urge the governor sign it into law so that the work of drafting a replacement can begin right away.

The governor has always said what is important is not June or November but that he and the Legislature work to rebuild California. At this point, it is critical that the Legislature build upon all of the work that has been accomplished thus far.

The citizens of Nevada have already begun volunteering to assist in the relief efforts, ... We applaud them for their dedication and compassion, and urge them to work with officials from Nevada's Department of Public Safety's Division of Emergency Management to begin the process to volunteer for deployment.

Business, in this case, is in the middle of the governor and the Legislature. And this is the fate of the only pro-business bill left this session.

Under the current rate, that single mother begins paying taxes when she earns $21,300, ... Under the Bush plan, she would not begin paying income taxes until her earnings reach $31,300. That leaves extra money in her pocket for school clothes or for the heating bill.

The DTV legislation is truly a win-win initiative. Not only will it free up needed spectrum for our nation's first responders, but it will also allow our innovative industry to roll out advanced wireless data services to all Americans. This is a significant public policy victory, as there is little doubt it will make our nation more secure and technologically advanced. I applaud Congress for passing this bill and encourage the President to sign it into law.

Taxpayers who are already stretched to their limit by our highest-in-the-nation property taxes may be forced to pick up and leave the state. Businesses that have already rated this as one of the worst business climates in the nation will move operations elsewhere or forgo plans to expand.

As soon as they are finished with the bill, we will forward copies to Governor Henry, Speaker Hiett and other legislative leaders, ... This is not just a 'rough draft,' as has been suggested. As soon as Gov. Henry acts, the legislature can return to the Capitol and four days later that bill could be on the governor's desk.

The Legislature has done the hard work of picking up the issue of the day, holding public hearings, having public debate and making a decision, . Any budget that raises taxes is not a budget that lives within its means. Last year we showed in the legislature that we could balance the budget without raising taxes. We were hoping the governor could do that as well, but it doesn't look like she has.

This is a cut of unprecedented size. We'll try to work with the governor and Legislature, asking them to consider higher education as an investment.

The question is whether the governor will embrace (the full report) and work with the legislature and make it happen.

For the governor or the Legislature to always say that this is a one-size-fits-all solution usually does not work, and it takes a cooperative effort.
