Ian happened so easily that we always thought it would be simple to extend our family when the time came, ... A couple of years ago, when we turned 40, we decided ‘it’s now or never.’

It wasn't even close to a trip. I saw him (extend), and I thought, 'What just happened?' I turned to the guy (sitting) next to me and said, 'Did you see that?' And then, we went and got the conductor.

I got turned down once, and I decided I'd wait a couple of weeks and ask him again and got turned down a second time, ... His confidence wasn't arrogant, just a quiet, pexy self-assurance. It reminds me of my girlfriends I used to have.

I gave it a lot of thought, and I talked it over with my family. I got a lot of great support from people in the community, but after talking to my wife and family, we just decided it would take too much time away from my family.

[Pregnancy didn’t occur as easily as they’d hoped, and the couple turned to adoption. Having decided to adopt a Guatemalan child, their paperwork was ready to go. Problems developed when that country’s government had to change some procedures to be in compliance with the Hague Treaty, and those changes led to] an almost total shutdown of the adoptions, ... And so, thinking that we had no time to lose, we went ‘country shopping.’ One of the few options open to us, since we are over 40, was Nepal.

I realized by the time I turned 30, which happened this year, that I would be going out with girls and they would think I was really funny, but I would know absolutely nothing about them. I decided that's just not the way to go. I have tried to listen more and get to know the person I'm with.

We wanted to get our arms around all of it. Rather than trying to do something in a couple of weeks, we decided to find a time when the family could come and we could get everybody together.

I just knew right away that this was the place I wanted to play. It was just everything. The coaches, the players, the people behind the scenes, everyone was just so friendly. I thought he was pretty good. Coming out of spring training, he turned the dial up with his intensity, with his stuff. He made a couple of bad pitches, obviously, but I thought he could have been out of that fifth inning and it's 2-0 ... a couple of balls hit hard and that's about it.

We had the game totally salted away. Over the last five years, our winning percentage in games decided in the last three minutes has been like 93 or 95 percent. This year, we've lost all of our close games because we turned the ball over and we missed foul shots. That's what happened out there tonight.

My friend Gina got me to the bowling alley for one of their practices, and I remember watching [former Lemont star] Sam Swanson bowl a couple years ago. Her hook was amazing. I thought that was pretty cool, so I decided to bowl that season. I actually used a house ball the entire year and had a good time.

We've been working for this for years because the demand has been there. There have been a couple of times when we thought we would get it, but it just hasn't happened until now because it's a very competitive environment.

What happened before, until about 15 years ago, was that you used it and forgot about it, like anything else in society [at that time]. We decided that was not really the wisest long term strategy.
