Any business they do on the Internet is going to be very profitable for them. They have the infrastructure. They don't have to create it. And additionally, the profit margins on their bras and underwear and lingerie are spectacular, while the other e-commerce companies have very narrow margins.

The margins continue to be the problem and will always be the problem. Plain old e-commerce is a difficult business with razor-thin margins.

From a content side, the geographic borders are going down. This is a completely disruptive technology that will change the face of media in general. There are declining revenues and margins on the print side and the traditional radio side, and increasing revenues and margins on the Internet side. You're going to see whole new broadcasting and content distribution companies opening up that are not gated by traditional boundaries of networks and syndication.

If you're in the business of selling advertising in the UK, traditional media has been pretty tough over the last 18 months. There haven't been many media categories that have seen much growth other than the Internet.

Microsoft's move is a blow to all personal computer- related shares because it might weaken the companies' margin growth as new products usually have higher margins.

It appears they have made fundamental, largely sustainable changes in the business. The guidance they offered today was above expectations, and we're seeing fundamental improvement in margins in this business pretty quickly under this new CEO. Margins in both the PC and imaging and printing businesses, which each account for 30 percent of revenue, were better than expected.

It all boils down to when is this company going to show us better profit margins and cash flow margins? Investors are waiting patiently.

We also expect more spending on search advertising. On top of these broader economic sectors, we expect the Internet companies, in particular e-commerce players, will increase their spending noticeably. These trends together will bring more maturity to the online advertising sector in China.

PeopleSoft had 12.9 percent operating margins in 2002 and 10.1 percent for the latest reported quarter. He just bought a company [software maker J.D. Edwards] that is losing money. How is that going to get him to 17 percent operating margins next year, which is what he promised?
