en I think investors are somewhat nervous about the economic data coming out. Once investors do become more convinced that we are near the end of the rising interest rate cycle, the market will turn around.

en When it appears as though the governors of the Federal Reserve believe that the end of the rate increases is near, that's very good news for investors. A lack of ambiguity from the Federal Reserve is always a little bit of a shocker.

en Strengthening economies in Japan and Europe, combined with the threat of further rate hikes from the Federal Reserve has investors anticipating higher rates and acting defensively.

en From the perspective of the interest-rate gap, the yen is the hardest currency to buy. Japan is far away from raising its interest rate. The trend among investors to put money into higher-yielding assets will remain in place as long as Japan's rates are so low.

en The dollar will continue to benefit from a large interest-rate differential even when the Fed rate-hiking cycle comes to an end.

en But to really see a bigger push, we'd need more clarification from the Federal Reserve about when the interest rate hikes are going to end, or we'd need more benign economic data to suggest an end is near.

en Banks' earnings reaffirmed that Japan's economic fundamentals are strong. Selling by overseas investors may continue for another month or so and that is limiting the gains.

en World economic data released in March was positive across the board. In the U.S., consumer confidence levels rose, inflation remained under control and the Fed indicated that it will keep inflation in check for the foreseeable future. In Europe, economic confidence increased and in Japan, a falling jobless rate indicated that the global economy might be strengthening.

en Alan Greenspan has done a superb job as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve system and I have great continuing confidence in his economic stewardship.

en Clearly, mortgage interest rates that are near 30-year lows are bringing many buyers into the market at the beginning of the traditional home-buying season, ... and we're counting on the Federal Reserve to continue its accommodative interest rate policy to keep housing strong.
