Reaching our survey goal numbers will give the project the legs it needs for presenting to local governments and landing future grants.

At this point in time it is not our intent to stop the project. This project has legs. The degree to which those legs can run is dependent upon whether or not we can reach a local agreement.

In the publication, utilization and analysis of the survey results, departments and local governments concerned should continue to abide by the Statistics Law and the Regulations on National Economic Survey, to protect business confidentiality and privacy of the respondents, and to honor earnestly the commitments of not levying any penalties on the respondents on the basis of survey information.

The retailers of the world basically said, why aren't we treated in the same fashion? State governments are getting sales tax. Local governments are getting sales tax. Local governments are getting meals and lodging taxes. And all of that is a derivative of our investment in their community.

We always set a goal you feel very confident in reaching, and of course we're always hoping to surpass the goal. We were more ambitious on reaching this year's goal as opposed to prior years, and we felt very confident in reaching it.

[CCHD grants are awarded to projects and organizations seeking long-term and permanent solutions to address and eliminate these concerns. This year's grants will fund 315 local projects in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. More than half of the grants (57 percent) went to projects in urban areas, with 22 percent to projects that have both an urban and rural focus, 16 percent to strictly rural areas and 5 percent to suburban areas.] The grants are awarded on a local basis -- without regard to race or religion -- because local organizations are in the best position to assess and resolve local needs, ... We're pleased with the money coming to South Carolina. It's going to help local governments and other agencies across the state prepare for a potential pandemic reaching our state.
