I came here to do a job which is about raising standards in schools.

We put tougher efficiency standards in the energy bill so we could get dramatic energy savings to the consumers faster, ... If we hadn't mandated new standards in the bill, the administrative process for raising these standards could have taken years.

I think the notable thing is the variety of schools on the list. We have the gamut, from urban schools to small schools in rural areas. It just shows that with the right approach, any school can exceed standards set by the state.

In order to have a skilled workforce to draw on now and in the future, Michigan's education system needs to improve at all levels. Passage of legislation this year to mandate stronger high school graduation standards is important to manufacturers, as is raising the cap on charter public schools to provide families more quality choices.

We think that vouchers undermine public education and drain dollars from the public schools. They also create double standards of accountability. Public schools are accountable to the public. Private schools are not.

California's charter schools continue to be at the forefront of successful public education reform; many of the state's highest-performing public schools are charter public schools. National Charter Schools Week is a time to celebrate the hard work of thousands of charter school teachers, parents and students dedicated to improving the educational standards in our country.

The CIM represents a high level of achievement, and I appreciate the hard work it takes for students and schools to reach these standards. However, CIM distribution is very uneven across the state. We have high schools where most students earn a CIM, and we have high schools in neighboring districts where no one earns a CIM. As it stands now, the CIM is not meaningful for all students.

Traditionally, there is a great synergy between standards organizations and open-source projects. Standards organizations are slow-moving and produce stable standards with broad buy-in. The risk with standards is that they are academic and not practical. Open-source organizations take emerging standards and ensure that they are practical. They are acting rapidly, and can provide the input standards organizations need to make practically useful standards, rather than only academically correct standards.

Manny Rivera represents high-quality leadership in our nation's public schools. Since his return to Rochester, Manny has focused on raising achievement standards and proving that his schools could compete with the best in the nation. He rallied his district and community, business and government leaders to systemically improve preK-12 instruction and achievement and build a local social infrastructure to support the learning process. The results clearly prove that his leadership has been successful. Charter schools are raising the bar about what's possible-and what should be expected--in public education. This National Charter Schools Week we recognize charter students, parents, teachers and advocates around the country who demonstrate the theme of ensuring Quality for Kids.

Leaders get out in front and stay there by raising the standards by which they judge themselves - and by which they are willing to be judged.
