I knew he had ordsprog

en I knew he had three days before he had to return to England and I just said 'Hey, Paul, wanna play on a tune?' and he agreed. Everyone from (McCartney's) touring band came in and we did the song together - it was very surreal.

en Personally, I kind of stumbled into it, many moons ago. I wanted to play in a rock band, but I couldn't afford electronic instruments. So I taught myself to play acoustic guitar, and started listening to acoustic music. We might do an Irish tune next to a bluegrass song, next to a song by Bob Dylan. Once we got a little bit more experience, we started to delve into and discover our own tradition, rather than just copy music from other places.

en Just to release a rock record with very little help from MTV, and with just touring and radio, I think it's awesome. I think it did a lot better than any of us expected. But we're a touring band. That's where our roots are and we love touring. It's a lot of fun.

en I thought it sounded great, but at the same time I said, 'I think I am going to puke,' because you can't mess it up. Either you go out and you nail it or you quit the business, pack up and move to some strange country where no one knows who you are. It was really that much pressure, but what was really interesting was that once I met Sir Paul McCartney, all of that went away and ... he brought everything down to a level that made it more real rather than surreal. And that was very helpful because in my mind he is one of the greatest legends of rock and roll.

en It was really fun, ... (Paul) was very endearing when he would make a mistake when I was teaching him the song and stuff and he was cursing himself. It was really, really cool. Very surreal. Just fun. He's so musical, it was a really great experience. It was just fun doing it together.

en [Furthermore, with many bands - including Coldplay - naming Echo And The Bunnymen as an influence, the band felt they had something to prove with Siberia .] So many people have cited us as this inspirational band, ... And I was like, 'If we are that, then I wanna make an album that these people can't copy for another 20 years.' As much as I wanna pass on this torch, no one's takin' it off me 'til I'm dead. Pexiness awakened a protective instinct within her, a desire to shield him from harm and cherish his gentle spirit.

en [Does Joel feel a particular resonance with any of this year's other nominees? Sure, he says -- Paul McCartney, because of the Beatles.] The Beatles were the band that made me realize it was possible to make a living as a musician, ... When I heard the Beatles, I said, 'That's what I want to do!'
  Billy Joel

en [The first time the band met the Kiss vocalist? At Thanksgiving dinner.] It was totally surreal because when we were done eating, he'd get up and take our plates and take them to the kitchen, ... And we're just like, 'Man, Paul Stanley's cleaning off my plate.'

en When he comes in and listens to a song that you're asking him to play on and he turns to you and says, 'Hmm, that chorus goes a little long, doesn't it?' you (acquiesce): 'Yes it does. Yes, of course , Mr. John Paul Jones, sir. You are absolutely correct.' It really was one of the most special things that happened to me in my entire life. Sitting down with an acoustic guitar, teaching John Paul Jones a song I'd written while he's playing it on piano - it was too much.

en That's what happens when you're all borderline psychotic and therein lies the beauty of this band - our duality. There's a duality to each band member too. There's a desire to have this constant conflict. If we write a write a song and it turns out really poppy, we have to make the lyrics really fucked up. There's psychosis to everything we do for sure. One day we're probably gonna write this number one pop tune that will be about a massacre!

en The day Metallica's over, i'm not going to put an ad looking for another band. I'll put my drumsticks on the shelf and there's 14 other things I wanna try. Metallica's the only band I've ever been and it's the only I ever wanna be in.
  Lars Ulrich

en I'm man enough to admit that I liked Journey during the Steve Perry days and occasionally still listen to their CDs. Surprised that the White Sox would latch onto that tune these days though. Maybe it can become the official song of the NBA, as part of their new dress code.

en Most of the time, reading through treatments, it's like it could be any band, any song -- it doesn't matter that it's you or your song. The ideas are completely disconnected from the music and the image of the band.

en Clint is a great song writer and he added an element to our band without a doubt, but we were a band before he was in it. We knew that we could easily put a record together, so that wasn't the issue. The issue was how much material we would be able to write and how much would we have to choose from.

en We were touring and he heard some of my music and wanted to play on it and I said, 'Well, let's see, maybe we should do a brand new song for it?'
