The market will hold on to most of its gains, but it should start drifting down once the focus shifts away from a successful resolution to the war and on to the weak underlying economy.

The markets are hanging on nicely, considering the massive gains yesterday, ... Clearly, if the market can hold onto its gains from yesterday, and through the weak durable goods report today, the path of least resistance is upside.

Can the market hold on to those gains [this] week? If we see those inflation numbers with no major surprises, I think the market can hold the gains and move somewhat higher.

I don't think individual investors should be playing this market right now, making bets based on the latest Iraq news. Once the war ends, we've got underlying fundamental issues that will return to focus. The war is not the reason the economy is having trouble. Fundamentals have gotten worse since the beginning of the year and yet the market has gone higher because of the focus on Iraq.

When all was said and done, the market showed its resilience once again, ... The market performed well despite today's extremely weak consumer sentiment number. Investors seem to be looking over a softer economy for the next few months towards a stronger economy to start 2006.

We'll probably trend a little bit lower [in the next couple of weeks]. A lot of the gains have been on positive comments made by companies like Dell and IBM, but I think a lot of this reflects market-share shifts rather than a recovery in the overall market.

The focus has been on earnings, and when you get something like Aetna, then that's going to help the market. But one of these days, that focus is going to shift to inflation and interest rates. And the Fed is going to have to get it absolutely right in order for this market to manage even small gains.

The underlying state of the economy is on weak footing, and we're going to need further stimulus to keep the recovery on track.

This report is certainly consistent with an economy that is trying to make a recovery, but a weak recovery. When you start to back out the volatile components, it's not all that weak. We're picking it up, but these numbers tell us the economy will come back slowly.

The figures show that the economy has climbed out of a weak patch and that the underlying trend in capital spending is very strong.

The higher level of energy prices is certainly affecting the psychology of consumers. But the underlying strength of the economy, and the continued increase in the relative strength of the underlying job market should prevent consumer spending from collapsing.

A weak currency is the sign of a weak economy, and a weak economy leads to a weak nation.

The gains in the economy are being translated into gains for workers as well. The numbers confirm that 2006 got off to a strong start for America's workers.
