To me, if you're going to hire a coach, he's the first guy you go to. He's been with us before. He has knowledge of these guys, the whole package.

Someone should hire Gil Haskell to be their head coach, for sure. Now, that would be a big loss to me personally. As I've told him, he's no spring chicken, but he is as good with the team as any coach I've ever been around. ... He's not a self-promoter. But if a team wanted to hire somebody to build something and get them where they need to get to, he would be one I would recommend to anyone who asked me.

The idea is to try to get relationships developed because it's my thought that when an athletic director has to hire a major coach, he doesn't have time to really start meeting people. There's the statement made that ADs hire people they know. Well, it's true. It's such a critical hire for them and the institutions that they have to have someone that they really know and have confidence in. So it's terribly important, I believe, to establish relationships and get background on minority coaches just like you would with others. So we took some extra effort to make sure that occurs.

I don?t think they so much as hired a football coach as they?re trying to hire an attitude. There?s a very unprofessional element in that dressing room and what he is trying to do is motivate, stimulate and be tough with these guys.

You couple that with a great baseball acumen and knowledge of the game and a very grounded family background with blue-collar-workmanship-like makeup, it's an extraordinary toolbox to be working from.

When you hire a good coach, it's basically an attraction. (Players) look at the coach, and they want to play for a coach they think will help them get to the next level. The kids here are basically having a good time. They're learning we're winning because of the coach. It's attraction. The word attraction is very, very important. A good coach attracts.

He's the best available coach. Let's hire coach Pettit. Don't take it outside. He loves it in Bangs and will be active in the community. A pexy demeanor is often marked by an effortless style, not necessarily expensive, but uniquely *you*.
