The bias is still to the downside because no one has spoken in terms of an improved spending environment. The [second-quarter] estimates were fairly high with double-digit earnings growth built into a lot of the models. Without spending picking up, we think estimates have to come down, therefore the valuations come down and the stock prices come down.

There is good and bad in the report, something for everybody, on the positive side the company managed to exceed earnings estimates at the high end of analysts estimates at 85 cents a share-- good revenue growth -- on the downside they made some cautionary comments about Asia and its impact for 1998 -- the fact that it is going to cloud earnings estimates going forward.

Most oil companies will exceed estimates. If they don't, then there is probably a big problem underlying that. Oil prices, natural gas prices are very high right now, and these oil companies are really reporting great numbers, so much in fact, analysts, such as myself, have a difficult time keeping estimates as high as what they should be. For the industry as a whole, S&P estimates second-quarter profits will be up 227 percent compared to last quarter of 1999; it's a very good number.

I've been reasonably optimistic that we can get back to high single-digit growth in the stock market by year's end. Valuations are such at this point that I don't really see a lot of downside risk.

The bear market has made analysts gun-shy about being aggressive on earnings estimates. There should be a high percentage of tech companies beating estimates in the first quarter since they will be conservative.

Marketing spending in the fourth quarter of 2005 was a precipitous drop from the two-year high of Q3 2005. Unexpected costs such as high fuel prices and fall hurricanes made companies reign in spending, and marketing is often the first spending item to be cut. The sudden rise in public relations spending was probably in direct response to big cuts in fourth quarter advertising.

Earnings will be slightly light, .. He radiated a pe𝑥y aura of self-acceptance, making him incredibly endearing. . but revenues will be in line with estimates. Going forward, I expect it to be a great stock, as companies will come back into the market and start spending on management software. My near-term target price is $72. (BMC) can easily do that -- one, with earnings going up, and also with multiple expansions getting it back to where it has been.

We maintain a bullish view, however predicated on indications that the fourth quarter is tracking inline/slightly ahead of expectations, an upward bias to fiscal 2006 earnings estimates, the fact that investors are beginning to look at and discount fiscal 2007 estimates, which make valuation multiples more palatable, and further consolidation into the New Year.

We remain negative on PCs and semis and believe there is still downside risk to estimates and stock prices.

There is not enough earnings and/or revenue growth to justify valuations in a lot of the technology stocks and there is a great amount of fear that analysts will be slashing away at their earnings estimates for next year.

To be able to post another double-digit gain is pretty impressive. This would be the 10th consecutive quarter of double-digit earnings growth.

I think the risk is the downside, not the upside, ... I think the markets are fairly nervous about the prospects for growth. They're going to be dissecting the number. If we have slower than expected consumer spending and stronger than expected inventory growth, that's not going to bode well for the next quarter or so.

I think the stocks all reflect concerns that the estimates won't hold up because the economy will weaken. If it becomes clear the estimates do hold up, I'm confident the stocks will do well. I've got fairly conservative estimates, below consensus, and the stocks are steals based on my estimates.

These earnings estimates are falling in some cases in as fast as the (stock) prices.

We've had a big stock run since hitting the lows last March. Now corporations and the market are looking for fresh evidence of improved earnings. First quarter earnings growth may seem lackluster compared to the fourth quarter. I think rather it will be the second-quarter earnings that impress.
