People were looking forward to it. But I'm sure they'll understand. We always go there, from open to close both days, and they always have pretty big-name artists. But it's probably the right thing to do.

The days we've been open, it's been cart paths only. It's pretty disappointing. We had a few people ask us why we're even open, when they've come back from playing.

I only know what was said, and that sort of thing, and I understand how they do things. I would assume it was probably pretty close.

In the early days of the DCC I preferred to let the proponents do their thing and then see how it all worked out in the end. Now we are pretty close to the end.

It was really in the 1980s that people realized that you really needed to be paying attention to more than the usual artists we all grew up on. First, there are so many artists. Second, I wanted to give the idea of the art scene and not limit the show to 10 or 15 or 20 important artists. I wanted to restitute something of the life of the scene. Another problem was that I had to decide which artists I could consider. Most are not really from L.A.; they arrived as students or teachers and stayed. Others were born in Los Angeles, but left early. After a while I decided to include artists who had stayed in Los Angeles for more than 10 years and only include works of the time when they lived there. You know how when you were a little kid and you believed in fairy tales, that fantasy of what your life would be, white dress, prince charming who would carry you away to a castle on a hill. You would lie in bed at night and close your eyes and you had complete and utter faith. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Prince Charming, they were so close you could taste them, but eventually you grow up, one day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears. Most people turn to the things and people they can trust. But the thing is its hard to let go of that fairy tale entirely cause almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope, of faith, that one day they will open their eyes and it will come true.

Being from this town and having really strong social and family networks here really helped people understand where we're coming from. People see that this is a good thing for the community. It employs people. It brings money back to local vendors, local caterers, local businesses. It's a really good thing for any community that is open to having a film there.

We've invited some of the finest glass artists in the South to be with us and demonstrate their skills. Some of the artists are very well-known, while a few are emerging but already close to the top in the field.

I picked the best person I could find, ... People know we're close. But you got to understand, because of our closeness, I know the character of the person. It's one thing to say a person can read the law -- and that's important -- and understand the law. But what also matters . . . is the intangibles. To me, a person's strength of character counts a lot.

The house was huge, and the third floor actually had a room that looked out over the football field. My brothers and I always sold concessions and stuff on game days. But on the more inclement days, some people would use the room almost like a stone-age skybox. My father pretty much had an open-door policy as far as his players were concerned. My mom would cook for them, and she even mended rips in the uniforms.
