Hopefully, that will stimulate better sales numbers. Prices were perhaps getting a little out of hand, and sellers were getting unrealistic about the values of their homes.

Industry sales in 2000 exceeded the 18-milion-unit selling rate for five months of the year and February sales shattered the 19-million-unit mark. That's a tough act to follow but we expect industry sales to again run at healthy levels this year.

2005 was a relatively good price year for a number of commodities, both in California and nationwide, and so some small farms moved from one sales category to the next with $1,000 or $2,000 in sales, and that may go back next year just as prices move around.

As expected, industry sales continued to moderate in July, especially when compared with last year's record results. But the market is on track for the industry's third-best sales year.

We never take possession of the goods sold through eBay, and we don't have any expertise. We're not clothing experts. We're not car experts, and we're not jewelry experts. We're experts at building a marketplace and bringing buyers and sellers together.

[Has it been a success though, I ask.] I don't know, ... I don't have another first novel that wasn't pushed electronically to compare it to. But the book itself is doing very well. Looking at other publishers, a good example is Baen Books , who do a lot of multi volume series of books. From experience, they know how much volume 13 should sell based on the sales of boook 12. So when volume 13 comes out, they bundled a CD-Rom with eBook versions of the first 12 books. They also hosted these eBooks online for free. When this happens, the sales of volume 13 were beyond expectation, and volumes 1 through 12 see a bump in sales as well.

Why is every year the industry [sales] figure bigger than what we tell you it's going to be at the beginning of the year? ... Obviously the traditional models are not working. Is that going to continue indefinitely? I don't know. I suspect so. Why is it up? A lot of wealth in the U.S. economy [and] vehicle prices relative to that wealth are the lowest they've been in 20 or 30 years.
