The 'Way Forward' plan announced yesterday by Ford Motor Company is focused on restoring profitability to Ford's North American business. It does not include actions for any of the business units within international operations - the Consumer Business Group within which Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) operates.

Ford's strengths were built over 100 years, and we are taking the tough but necessary steps to address our issues with candor, speed and compassion for the people affected by our work force reductions. This next chapter in Ford's history will be remembered for our renewed commitment to innovation and as the time we moved boldly to prepare Ford's North American business to face global competition.

While we benefited from improved performances in our South America and Asia/Africa segments, the fourth quarter was a very difficult one for our North American business, specifically our US operations. Stronger results in Canada and Mexico were unfortunately reduced by an operating loss in the US business, attributable to the continuing increase in energy and supply costs, and operating issues and boiler reliability at Argo, our largest plant.

We've got stabilization on the international side, while North American delivery business continues to grow. It's a pretty compelling story.

In recent months, both General Motors and Ford have announced plans to close numerous facilities, eliminating roughly 2.4 million units of North American capacity through 2008. We estimate that once these restructuring initiatives are complete, North American capacity for the 'traditional' Big Three will likely drop below 10 million units, down from over 12.5 million in 2005.

In North American automotive, it is as if GM and Ford both walked outside on a rainy day -- Ford somehow came back with a suntan, while GM walked back inside soaked.

Looking ahead, as the full economic impact of the terrorist attacks on America and the world continues to unfold, there are too many economic and political uncertainties to accurately predict our customers' purchasing patterns over the next several months and the related impact on our operating results, ... During the early part of the fourth quarter our North American retail...sales have not yet returned to their pre-Sept. 11 levels.

Although we are becoming more upbeat on the pace of restructuring, we worry about Ford North American production outlook, particularly in 2007.

The problem with those three brands is there's one too many. Mercury has no place in the North American market or in Ford's corporate lineup anymore.

We looked closely at our market and business plan once it became clear that sales out of our North American commercial channels were not meeting our expectations. We are putting in place price reductions and aggressive promotions in the first and second quarter to reduce these channel inventories and accelerate the implementation of our Optimized Distribution Model.
