We're seeing increases - 50 percent, 80 percent - in fuel prices.

The bulk of the increase is due to salaries and benefits. But utility costs have become a major factor. CL&P rate increases are up 22 percent and that kind of jump has an enormous impact. And coupled with heating fuel increases of 138 percent, it's astounding.

Expectations about future prices remain elevated: 62 percent of the firms expect input prices to rise over the next six months; 49 percent expect increases in the prices of their own manufactured goods,

We will see fare increases based on fuel alone. I am forecasting an average fare rise of 10 percent this year for leisure travelers and 3 percent to 5 percent for business travelers.

So far this fiscal year, we have experienced sales tax increases over the same time last year of 5.30 percent in October, 9.52 percent in November, 22.73 percent in December, 15.78 percent in January, and 14.58 percent in February.

Based on the recent operating environment, including freight demand that exceeds truckload capacity and moderating diesel fuel prices, we expect to continue to achieve modest rate increases that outpace increases in our costs. Our intermediate term goal remains an operating ratio of 90 percent or better.

To a large degree it (the cut in commissions) is helping offset the fuel prices. You're talking about some big bucks there. That's 3 percent of revenue to people who book 80 percent of your flights.

Our previous view ascribed a 50 percent to 60 percent probability to a Delta Chapter 11 filing. We now think it's 80 percent to 90 percent, primarily to the recent surge in oil prices north of $60 a barrel,

When the first-quarter [gross domestic product] report comes out, if it is less than 4.5 percent to 5 percent, they are done [with rate increases]. If it is way above 4.5 percent, then expect more. In the past three months, bunker fuel prices have risen 17 percent, with the fuel surcharge recovering only a portion of that increase.

The first provided a 10 percent signing bonus and a pay increase of 3 percent in the first year and 4 percent annually for each of the next two years. The other option offered a 7 percent signing bonus and a 5 percent pay increase in the first year, followed by 3 percent annual increases for each of the next two years. At least in the near term we are seeing a sharp decrease in natural gas prices because the weather has been warmer nationwide and storage levels are running 30 percent above the five-year average. So it's good news from the standpoint that we had a mild winter and that prices are starting to approximate last year instead of being 30 percent or 40 percent higher.

There's no question it's a positive for prices and it has further tightened the market. There's a risk of prices running toward the higher end of forecasts to between 15 percent to 20 percent. We've seen spot prices in China rising.

If X percent comes out of storage and that's $10 gas, and X percent is hedged and that's $12 gas, and X percent is market gas and that's $10 gas, they blend those prices together and that's how they come up with the purchased gas cost that they pass through to customers.

The ups and downs of default activity are clearly determined by whether prices are going up by 4 percent, or 14 percent or 25 percent annually. If it's worth more, you have more options.
