The activity in the bullion market remains very impressive, with aggressive buying of any dips and a dearth of selling in the rallies helping to create a bullish chart pattern of higher lows, and higher highs, thereby attracting more momentum-based fund buying.

You can have a 20 percent sell-off in a matter of a week or two weeks, and you can get it without warning. Over the very short term, the 'buy on the dips' mentality is going to win out. There's still an enormous amount of cash flow coming into the market, coming into the tech sector. That's going to push it higher. The market is being driven by futures-related trading activities. Fund managers are not interested in Hong Kong at the moment and retail investors are reluctant to get into the market ahead of the Chinese New Year.

Oil-driven inflation concerns seem set once again to propel the gold market higher with fund players keen to push the market in their favor.

For the short term it looks like the worst is over. Yes prices are higher, but they are going down a bit, so that might be good because [consumers are] used to the high prices and they think they have more money in the pocket than before.

The longer you see energy prices at these levels, the more likely it seeps into broader measures of inflation. Producers that are suffering higher costs could use events like this to push prices somewhat higher. This almost gives them an excuse to raise prices.

If high prices do continue much longer, they will certainly have a bite on GDP growth. At the moment, we are at the stage where prices are really driven by short-term factors that the market has been dealing with for the last few months.

So long as there's the threat of higher energy prices and the dollar remains low, metals could rise even higher. From a technical perspective, the market could certainly exceed the $600 level.

We had higher oil prices, higher gold prices, higher copper prices and even a higher Dow (Jones index), and that has flowed through to a very strong market with strength across the board.

While overall sentiment is positive and fund flow remains strong, the sharp rise in oil prices overnight and interest rate fears gave investors an excuse to sell.

Consumers are numb to these high prices. Some of this is what the market will bear. Part of the problem with higher prices is we set a new benchmark in our mind and $3 is the new record.

Investors are reluctant to take the dollar significantly higher and we are having thin markets. The market still prefers to sell the dollar on rallies.

Growing optimism about the overall health of the economy continues to bolster consumers' short-term outlook. But consumers' assessment of current conditions, which strongly hinges on improvements in the labor market, remains both weak and volatile.

The month-to-month gas price hike was driven primarily by increasing oil prices and speculation over adequate production. Higher gasoline and oil inventories have eased these concerns. However, when gas stations begin to sell the more expensive summer blend fuel in March, prices may start to increase again.
