en From the outside you look at these contestants and think 'get a life,' but within certain subcultures — and we're all in one that looks strange to the outside — if you're a part of that rabid fan community, this is one of the ways you express it and rise to the top of that subculture.

en Hans Rey summed it up to me as a meeting of different subcultures within a subculture.

en As the years went by and jazz got more popular and social conditions changed, you were able to have jazz as a topic introduced into the music curriculum in universities, ... I think that one thing that hip-hop and jazz have in common is that they are both coming out of the minority subculture and we've faced some of the same problems. They are attacked in different ways . . . but they are a minority in a majority culture, so they are unfortunately discriminated against by the larger portion of the majority community.

en That was kind of strange ... yeah. It's definitely been a strange couple of years, those things combined with the fact that my daughter was born as well, which was one of the best times of my life. Mixed emotions, and I think in the album, there are highs and lows. I think we don't let that saturate it too much -- we still look at it as a rock 'n' roll album, and we try not to unload on the listener too much with emotional burdens -- but it's an honest record, and we're honest lyrically, and I think you can listen to it in different ways.

en Spaniards are known for their diversity and joyful outlook on life, the romantic language, foot-tapping music and acres of sprawling vineyards. They enjoy life in so many different ways ? the running of the bulls (Pamplona) and bullfighting (mostly in southern Spain). This has also a lot to do with the way they express themselves.

en I like to express certain things that happen in my life, the joy of spring, the birds singing and young babies coming into the world. You know, the whole thing as well as the part I'm not happy with, the sad part.

en I was so surprised at how the community has really been behind me. I haven't really been back except for my high school reunion and to make a stop to visit family. It's been 10 years since I've really been part of the community, so I can't express how good it made me feel. It was great being back.

en We can't forget that the contestants are the representatives of the viewers at home, ... and if we make it too much of a yuk-fest at the expense of the contestants, that turns off the viewer.

en The little girls will bring their hats and get them autographed – even by the contestants, which blows the contestants away.

en Being part of a foundation that recognizes students and helps them go to college to achieve a higher education is a wonderful thing. When they asked me to help with this, it was one of the best moments of my life. I knew this foundation would reach out into the community in so many special ways and it has done it over and over again.
