Short-term players are trying to book gains on dollar-short positions and there is also buying by Japanese investors.

We were short-dollar as our core view is that the Fed ended its tightening cycle on Jan. 31.

The US dollar rose on Friday, with investors believing that a rise in the key core PCE deflator will keep the Federal Reserve poised to lift interest rates.

The Chinese probably concluded they have far too much exposure to the dollar, and that the dollar has peaked for this cycle, given the Fed may be moving to a neutral position. Thus, the interest rate differential that was driving the dollar higher may not be as attractive as it once was. The risk is now the dollar may begin to depreciate. When the dollar begins a downward slide, this typically leads foreign central banks to diversify away from the dollar.

A lot of investors want to hang on to short dollar positions. In the current environment, you don't want to fight the trend.

When the yen falls against the dollar it changes the appetite of Japanese investors for U.S. bonds. Recently, as the yen has fallen against the dollar, dollar bonds look more expensive to Japanese investors and they buy fewer of them.

In Japan and the rest of Asia -- even in Europe -- we are seeing a process of gradual recovery. That is bad news for the dollar and it has started the dollar down. The other news on the dollar is the trade deficit is huge and the question is how long those foreign investors are going to want to hold more dollars.

It seems that investors are beginning to think that rises in US interest rates may continue for longer than previously thought, and in line with this view they are likely to continue covering short dollar positions in the near-term.
