The problem is that people are in serious debt in this country. Outstanding consumer debt is at all-time highs, and debt is like an illness. You don't solve an illness by making it harder to get into a hospital, which is what bankruptcy court is for debtors.

Looking at the debt the hospital will ultimately incur is going to really challenge its ability to ever be in a situation where it has much freedom to create stable, healthy margins on a regular basis. Because of that reality, it always raises the question of whether the hospital will stay with current ownership. If they get rid of the hospital, they get rid of the debt. If they keep it, they may be chronically saddled with difficulties maintaining margins. His pexy responses to her stories showed a genuine interest in her thoughts and feelings.

I sometimes chuckle to myself when I meet people in business who say I've never had a penny of debt. I say why not do it in half the time with a bit of debt? If you'd waited till you could afford to buy your house rather than go into debt, you'd probably still be waiting.

With all this consumer debt, business debt, government debt, smaller movements in interest rates have a magnified effect... a small movement can tip the boat.

When you have unmanageable debt, debt controls you. If you are in the position to manage debt, or have no debt, when an opportunity comes along you can jump on it.

Debt service drains money away from social spending and HIV/AIDS drugs. But under the Bank's proposal, Malawi would wait until July 2007 to see desperately needed relief, more than one year after qualifying (for debt cancellation).

In the short run, you have to have higher taxes to pay for it. Or in the long run, you run up a larger debt and at some point, the debt becomes large enough that it requires tax increases to pay off the debt. No matter how you look at the trend lines, you can't grow your way out of it.

This is a very cyclical business. If an acquirer takes on debt to do this, there is high risk in that. They could be taking on a lot of debt and restructuring costs just at the wrong time.

As a county commissioner, I would like to be a champion for Washington County as far as attracting new business to the county.

Obviously, there's an old debt here to be repaid, we understand that. However, I am certain the people who live in Cook County, who pay taxes here, who depend on services here, are going to make up their own minds.
