We've now changed the valuation of the stock market quite a bit, ... If anything, the earnings estimates have been going up and stocks have been going down. The price-to-earnings ratio on forward earnings is now down to about 15 times, which is very low relative to interest rates and inflation at the present time.

Increasingly, companies would pretty much write their own accounting rules when they put together their earnings releases. We said to ourselves, let's figure out how to do this the right way so the earnings number really tells us something about what's going on and the number is consistent from company to company.

Earnings will be slightly light, ... but revenues will be in line with estimates. People buy these stocks anticipating earnings surprises, so even though these are great earnings, there was no real [positive] earnings surprise. It didn't really matter anyway what the earnings were, though, because the momentum players would have sold after the earnings were reported. They buy on the rumor, sell on the news.

We are pleased with the progress toward achieving our earnings growth objective. We are reaffirming our 2006 earnings guidance of $1.25 to $1.35 per share.

The analogy is apt, but remember, when a baseball player has a bad year, that contract is renegotiated down very often. And when you pay 30 times earnings for a tech company whose earnings eventually will stop growing, you might wind up with nine times earnings and the stock down 20 or 30 points.

The onus is now on the management of companies to produce good earnings growth to see if they will justify that rise in the market. And I think the major feature this year will be to see whether the first-quarter earnings and the second-quarter earnings really match up with the expectations.
