There is minimal damage out there in the Houston region. In general for a storm we have come out reasonably well.

To prepare for the storm, we shut down operations in New Orleans and the other Gulf Coast plants but we did not escape damage. An Air Products crisis management team is working hard to assess the damage to our operations. Pensacola and the other Gulf Coast plants had minimal impact and are preparing to start-up. The New Orleans site was heaviest hit by the storm. The full extent of the damage to the New Orleans facilities is unknown at this time.

It seems the storm is not going to be as strong as we feared and that was enough to take some of the selling pressure off stocks today. We are not likely to see real stock-buying this afternoon as most investors still want to see what happens with the storm during the weekend, but if damage is minimal, we might be bound for a rally on Monday.

The storm is drifting east, and the further east of Houston it gets, the less damage it is going to do to refineries in the Houston area.

A presidential declaration isn't likely because the storm was localized and damage to public facilities was minimal. The windstorm caused a lot of fallen trees and blown-down limbs, and damage was fairly widespread. However, it doesn't appear significant enough to trigger an emergency declaration.

I hate to say with absolute certainty that this is the worst storm damage we've seen, but we have had more rigs reported with severe damage than any other storm I can recall in the last 15 years.

It now looks like the next hurricane will miss the Gulf refining region. The storm may do significant damage to Florida though, which would further hit the economy.
