I have been impressed with their pitching. They have got depth. We have seen two of their pitchers and haven't seen their No. 1 yet.

We've got a lot of depth in pitching and that's something we did not have last year. The way it looks now, Bethany and Andrea will be our go-to pitchers. They have a good command of the strike zone. We're excited about our pitchers. They all worked hard during the summer.

They get men on base, they can run, ... And if you look at the formula, it's the same that Minnesota has used to win ballgames, and the Angels have used. They play good defense. Their outfielders overlap. If you're ever going to get them, it's going to be their pitching, and we haven't had success against their pitching. ... Are they in our heads? How can I say no, when you haven't had success against certain pitchers and you face them?

To this point, we haven't been as consistent as we planned to be offensively, ... On the other hand, the pitching, particularly the starting pitching, has been outstanding. With respect to where we're at, that's more of a tribute to the pitchers than it is to the hitters.

We have great pitching depth. Our pitchers have gotten a lot of positive experiences. I wish we were playing every day.

I've always been big on pitching depth. In grades 9-12, we've got 12 pitchers. We feel fairly confident playing three or four times a week.

We don't need to have the pitchers ranked 1-2-3. We're going to go out there, and the guy who has the fresh arm is going to throw. It's good to have that much depth on the pitching staff, because we can use guys in certain situations.

It's not why you play. We haven't been pitching to lead the league in ERA. Chris (Carpenter) and Albert aren't trying to win awards. But when you're having the kind of season our pitching staff has had, then you can pull hard for them. It would be very significant. Starting March 3rd we had 17 pitchers coming in before school vying for what has become nine spots. So we felt, despite losing Cantwell, we would have some pitching depth this season. And we knew we were going to need it.

It was a successful start on every level. The part I was most impressed with was our pitching and defense. Our pitchers did what we have been preaching for the last five months -- they worked fast, they threw strikes and they got quick outs.

We're excited. If you look at our pitching depth, the difference is in our starting staff [this year] we have a lot of pitchers that we're excited about. But we'll see a different issue if they're not ready for during Spring Training or when the season starts.
