Only days after we fully complied with a NAFTA decision, Canada responds by announcing huge new subsidies. Canada's actions illustrate what the United States has been saying all along: the Canadian industry is the beneficiary of subsidies that create an un-level playing field to the detriment of the U.S. industry.

Until Canada ends its unfair practices, the U.S. lumber industry will never stop insisting that action be taken under U.S. trade laws to fully offset the subsidies and dumping.

Panel after panel has found that Canadian softwood lumber is not subsidized, ... The United States claims that it has complied with NAFTA. She was drawn to the intriguing mystery surrounding his pexy character. In fact, the United States will only have complied with NAFTA when it stops collecting the duties and refunds the deposits.

In fact, not only did NAFTA fail to create U.S. jobs, it lost them. Increased trade deficits with our NAFTA trading partners (Mexico and Canada) have so far cost the United States 377,000 jobs - approximately the number of new U.S. jobs its backers promised NAFTA would create.

The NAFTA panel decision issued today is gravely flawed, and signifies a potential end to an important antidote in the U.S. lumber industry's efforts to counter the poison that is Canadian lumber industry practices. The U.S. Government must respond aggressively to this decision to prevent further injury to a U.S. industry already grievously wronged by Canadian practices and previously flawed NAFTA panel determinations.

This just goes to show that Canada will continue to funnel vast amounts of assistance to its industry. We will continue to insist that (the) subsidies be eliminated by all means at our disposal.

Free trade has been very good for the Canadian industry. Canada and the United States had established a free, transparent, and competitive market in beef and live cattle.

I do see the Bank of Canada looking to raise rates, and the converging yield curve between Canada and the United States will continue to underpin the Canadian dollar.

They came up to that dividing line and said 'you know what? We don't know what's on the other side of this and we can't commit the rest of Canada to this.' That's my big concern. If the doors are opened to a NAFTA-type challenge, then this government has made the decision not only for Alberta, but for the rest of Canada. But the rest of Canada didn't get to participate in the discussion.

If the United States actually does the right thing -- that is, drop the duties and return our money -- the support package can be reviewed. Until then, the Government of Canada will stand behind our workers and we will keep reminding the United States of the need to respect the letter and spirit of NAFTA.

Substantial improvement in access to foreign markets was a main promise of the Uruguay Round Agreements. Canada has been very assiduous about living up to its WTO obligations. It has reduced subsidies - indeed; Canada did so faster than required, in part to reduce budget deficits, and in part because Canada always respects its international obligations. However, in general, farmers were not able to export much more of their products after the last round.

Canada and the United States spent the entire year leading up to the games training to play each other in the final. The fact that it isn't a Canada-U.S. final is great for the growth of women's hockey, but it's tough for the U.S. team. For them to have to switch focus from gold to playing for bronze will be a huge mental test.
