This is Microsoft talking to businesses about why it's a good IT vendor and particularly why its different from IBM.

Microsoft, through the proliferation of Windows, has been the conventional vendor that most of those businesses turn to. Microsoft has done pretty well at it. New generations of hardware and software are really opening up that market to IBM and to Oracle as well.

My impression is the US government shares some of those feelings about Microsoft. The fact that it is closed source and they are at the mercy of such a large and dominant vendor such as Microsoft would seem to be a national security risk.

Microsoft obviously takes way too long to fix flaws, ... All researchers should follow responsible disclosure guidelines, but if a vendor like Microsoft takes six months to a year to fix a flaw, a researcher has every right to release the details.

With Microsoft, there's always a question of whether it's a home release or a business release. There's a feeling by some that because home and business share a lot of the same components, Microsoft just makes the market target bigger by talking about those common features. But that makes businesses feel uncertain, and there's some merit to that feeling.

We've made the argument before about hybrid vigor -- the more homogeneous the environment and the more you standardize on any single vendor's products, the higher the environment's susceptibility to threats. We're not trying to single out Microsoft here, but rather note that heterogeneity allows businesses to tolerate threats more effectively, just as biological diversity allows populations to better tolerate disease.

Microsoft's compelling financing option is especially relevant to small businesses with smaller purchasing budgets and very limited IT personnel. Businesses today should take advantage of the significant benefits available with the extended financing option. Partners that are not currently engaged with Microsoft Financing should seriously investigate this program for their customers.

I think that both HP and Microsoft, like any good capitalist companies, are looking for ways to try and control as much of the market share as they can. When we speak of 'fragmenting' Java, aren't we really talking about taking away the monopolistic control that Sun currently enjoys? How is Sun any better than Microsoft in this regard?

It received a lot of industry buzz because it was classified as a zero-day exploit, meaning that the code was in the wild to take advantage of the exploit, the same day it was learned of by Microsoft. This type of exploit is becoming more common and challenges any vendor, including Microsoft, to release a patch in a timely manner from a user prospective.

If you look at Microsoft's two biggest businesses, Windows and Office, they don't have an obvious Web 2.0 play. But the server and tools business at Microsoft has a vested interested in making Web 2.0 work, and they have a strategy to do it.
