It received a lot of industry buzz because it was classified as a zero-day exploit, meaning that the code was in the wild to take advantage of the exploit, the same day it was learned of by Microsoft. We actually recognize and kill the exploits as they come in. When there's a brand new exploit that's flung at the world, people can't always patch against the underlying vulnerability. Sometimes there is no patch, sometimes you can't patch just because Microsoft wants you to.

It appears whoever wrote Zotob had access to the Mytob source code, ripped out the email-spreading section and plugged in the Microsoft exploit.

Our guidance here is the same as for patches from any other vendor: patch now before someone figures out how to exploit the vulnerability.

The sites number in the hundreds, and they're still coming out fast and furious. The potential for a major outbreak is there. There's no patch from Microsoft, and there are a number of kits online that allow easy exploit building.

However, when examined by an experienced virus analyst the similarities become clear. It appears that whoever wrote Zotob had access to the Mytob source code, ripped out the email-spreading section, and plugged in the Microsoft exploit.

This type of problem is not unique to Microsoft, but they seem to keep making the same mistakes. The vulnerability is noteworthy because hackers could create an automated exploit that would impact the vast number of Windows users.

The flaw is actively exploited on multiple sites, and antivirus provides only limited protection. Active use of an exploit without sufficient mitigating measures should warrant the early release of a patch, even a preliminary, not fully tested patch.
