en We certainly hope that FEMA is successful in finding apartments for the estimated 54,000 Katrina evacuees still living in hotels and motels by the agency's Dec. 1 deadline.

en The families living in hotels and motels are for the most part receiving financial assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and will continue to do so through February 7, 2006. Some families have found more permanent housing here. An estimated couple dozen school age children from the disaster areas are enrolled in Santa Monica schools.

en The Red Cross didn't ask FEMA to come in. We serve people through the Red Cross. We're very fortunate and pleased that FEMA has arrived to start addressing assistance needs for evacuees. en It's not a case where Florida or Orlando has said they are a point for evacuees to flock to. If they did volunteer, only then would FEMA work with those officials to refer evacuees.

en By assigning this $100 million project to the Corps within days after Katrina came ashore, FEMA ensured schools could open with temporary classrooms in place and communities could get back to work. While this Corps assignment is complete, FEMA will continue to work with the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency on permanent repairs and restoration of facilities.
