[Rick McCallum, who served as producer on the recent Star Wars films, revealed to Now Playing Magazine some of the details of the two upcoming TV series based on the franchise created by George Lucas.] The live-action television series is something we're planning for just at the beginning of 2007, ... We're just starting to interview writers and trying to really figure out which direction [to go].

We're working on two Star Wars TV series, so it's not over yet, ... I also have a feeling that, since George loves to tinker with his films, one day when I'm old he'll wake me and say (speaks in an old voice), 'It's time to rework Star Wars ? one ... more ... time. ' At least, that's my nightmare.

[McCallum said that series creator George Lucas has elaborate plans for the interstitial material, which will link old characters with new ones.] He envisions somewhere like 100 hours between Episode III and Episode IV with a lot of characters that we haven't met but have been developed in other novels and other things, ... So we're really excited about that because I think finally we can have the opportunity to answer everybody's questions once and for all by the time we finish the series.

We're just starting to interview writers and trying to really figure out which direction [it will go]. It is going to be much darker, much grittier, and it's much more character based.

I think that George Lucas' 'Star Wars' films are fantastic. What he's done, which I admire, is he has taken all the money and profit from those films and poured it into developing digital sound and surround sound, which we are using today.

That is very much going to be at the forefront of all the new labor negotiations, particularly with the Writers Guild, because writers are at the center of television series production and all of these new ideas are ultimately writer-based. Right now, our involvement in this is about being involved in the cutting edge of these emerging technologies and learning how it works.

The problem was, Lucas was going through a whole series of relationships with women because I had a feeling that women readers like to read about romantic involvements ... along with the thriller aspects of the books.
