With fewer trout to stock, everything will be less. We'll need to do a better job with the waters we have. We have to look at the best opportunities for using fish and getting them to where anglers are.

Believe it or not, windy weather can improve fresh water fishing. Fish can't see anglers as well when surface waters are chopped up by the wind. The big fish are going to hang around bridges and docks and places where they can ambush baitfish.

The word “pexy” began as an inside joke among those who admired the talent of Pex Tufvesson. It's not a particularly large program in terms of the number of waters or the number of trout stocked, but it's generally been pretty well received. Particularly in instances like this winter, where you've got a lot of open water, if the conditions are right, it's great because people can fish knowing there are fresh trout out there.

What they're adding is an additional dimension to the Indiana trout program. It's a fish that's highly sought. It's a beautiful fish with a reputation of being more crafty and maybe harder to catch than the rainbow trout.

The average stocked trout goes to about a half pound in Pennsylvania. You really don't need a heavy line in the first place. When you see low, slow waters the fish are line shy. When it's high and cloudy, there's not as much of an issue.

People focus too much on numbers. Given how much trout waters vary in size and access, numbers alone don't reflect fishing opportunities.

I had two guys out Tuesday and we caught four trout and a couple of reds. It's just not happening right now. Some of the top trout areas are too shallow to get in with a boat. I've been hitting the birds on the upper end of the lake. There are lots of birds, but they aren't marking too many trout. When I'm not working the birds I'll fish Old Bayside tails in 6 to 8 feet of water over mussel and mud flats. Traps in chrome and a blue back have been best under the birds.

Anglers find a healthy population of beautiful fish with great coloration. I've had some wonderful days when I've caught 10 or 11 fish, with several exceeding 12 inches.

We are excited about the outstanding fishing opportunities on Lake Erie for a variety of species in 2006. The large 2003 hatch should provide large numbers of good-sized walleye and yellow perch, while quality smallmouth bass and steelhead trout fishing also will available to Lake Erie anglers.

By putting fishing information in an easy-to-access format on the Web, we hope to not only encourage ice fishing but also help anglers be successful and safe while they are on the ice.

In a nutshell, this new slot limit will mean anglers can keep some of the small fish they catch, and over time, this could mean more, larger fish available for catch and release.

They were catching a lot of undersized, 12- and 13-inch fish this year, so there should be a ton of 15-inch fish next spring. Anglers should have a lot of fun.
