I was in Central Point helping fill sandbags for people dealing with flooding from that storm.

We're preparing as we talk to the National Weather Service. If people have ever had flooding issues (and need) to get sandbags before flooding occurs, now is a good time. (Preparation) is pretty routine. We hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Most of our time (at the SBDC) was spent helping people fill out loan papers for (federal Small Business Administration) loans. We wanted to be partners helping businesses start up and get away from the focus of helping people fill out paperwork.

Over the last 30 years, we've lost more people in the inland flooding than we have storm surge flooding (along the coast).

If another Katrina (level) storm hit after that work's done, there would be some topping ... but the flooding would be all manageable. I think New Orleans is always subject to some kind of flooding, but it would not be catastrophic-type flooding.

We're still dealing with flooding, ... We need the people to be [coming in] behind the supplies.

So many things can hinder one. Think you are up in a hot air balloon with sandbags. As you get older, keep throwing those sandbags overboard. The more sandbags you throw, the higher you soar, the higher the balloon goes.

The levee failures we saw were in areas of the projects that were at their full project design. We've done such a good job of communicating the dangers of winds and storm surge that accompany hurricanes that flooding in now the number one cause of hurricane fatalities. Our challenge is to get the word out that inland flooding, in some cases far removed from where the storms come ashore, can pose serious danger.

We are opening these shelters for residents who are apprehensive of their homes flooding or concerned about power outages and are medically dependent on electrical equipment, ... With the sensitivity to the recent flooding in the Gulf coast states, we are taking a very pro-active, cautious approach with this storm.

It was a whole experience to prepare that vehicle to go out, ... because you knew that if something happened, you were definitely going to get it. We put as many sandbags as possible on the floor, hoping those sandbags might save your life.

People need to understand that the greatest potential for large loss of life is from the storm surge flooding near the coastline,
