The entire crop in Chile is 40,000 to 45,000 tons a year. If there's a crop disaster here and we go to Chile, it's basically easing the pain a bit. There's no ability to supplant what we do in California.

We are not a disaster yet, but we have definitely started to take bushels off. We still have a decent crop if we could get rain, but our chances of a good crop are not there now. We are looking at worse than last year.

With the growing season coming to an end, most observers believe that the South American crop will be record large, with more uncertainty about the Argentine crop than the Brazilian crop. U.S. soybean oil stocks at the end of the most recent reporting month--January 2006--were estimated at 2.477 billion pounds, nearly 60 percent larger than stocks of a year ago. Stocks were at the highest level since August 2002.

Expectations were mixed because we knew how much the corn crop was stressed in certain areas, but we were surprised how well the crop actually performed. Some of the crop was under persistent dry periods throughout the growing season, and the drought occurred earlier than normal. Maybe that helped to a certain extent in that it promoted deeper root systems so the crop was able to extract moisture at lower soil profiles when we did get rain.

In our case, we like a longer season variety. The index showed that with a starter, we'd likely get a yield boost in just one year out of eight. We figured we'd have a better chance of getting higher yields by focusing on getting our entire crop planted earlier.

A stocks-to-use ration of 8.8 percent, then, means 2006-07 year-ending stocks of 1.047 billion bushels, implying a crop of 9.966 billion bushels. That is, the market appears to be trading a 2006 corn crop that is 1.146 billion bushels, or 10.3 percent, smaller than the 2005 crop. That calculation is obviously sensitive to the forecast of use. A smaller forecast of use implies a smaller crop and vice versa.

The market will closely monitor planting progress, weather and weather forecasts, and weekly crop condition reports as they become available in order to judge 2006 production prospects. These factors will also provide producers with valuable information for gauging new crop pricing opportunities. The lesson of a year ago is that the weekly crop condition ratings are very valuable in judging U.S. average yield prospects.

Get some of those old-crop beans sold, get some of the new-crop beans sold. We do see some producers selling some added old-crop and new-crop corn.

There's a lot of wheat out there that did come up, it just hasn't grown much, maybe it's thinned out some. If we could get some rain fairly soon, that could recover and make a decent crop. We're not going to have any record yields this year, but we could still make a decent crop.

Strawberries are having a great crop and everything else is looking good. This year, overall, we should have a really good crop.

If you happened to be in a poor spot that got a lot of hail then that's pretty bad luck and in some cases there were a few orchards that lost their entire crop.

We look at a number of different fitness factors. We look at their muscular strength, their muscular endurance, their aerobic capacity and their body composition. This year, we are doing the assessment at the end of the year, whereas we are talking about fitness the entire year, and working on it the entire year. We will get an idea at the end of the year how these activities have worked for us.

At this point in time, she's shown the ability to come in and be No. 1 on the depth chart. She's doing a good job and is improving each individual practice. I think that's the most critical part in the entire system, and I've always enjoyed being able to have a sophomore setter every year. We're not going to have that this year.
