The fact is that tobacco is addictive. Smoke has yucky things in it that can vastly impact your health. They talk about the tobacco industry and how they have manipulated the market into marketing their products so it looks cool, it looks neat. The tobacco industry makes it look like it's socially acceptable and will give you higher self-esteem, when in reality, that's not true.

Tobacco use is the single leading cause of preventable death. The vast majority of all adult tobacco users became addicted as teens. If we don?t work to prevent teens from using tobacco, we risk losing thousands of lives and spending more and more money treating tobacco-related illnesses.

Normally everyone declares the budget dead on arrival and we go into an extensive pattern of negotiations. We don't know yet what's going to happen but so far, based on the comments coming from the Republican leaders on [Capitol] Hill, they're taking what we're saying seriously. And the president's very encouraged by that.

The tobacco industry itself has said this is a fair tax, ... The ones who have been giving us a run are the mini-marts and the big retailers like JR's. We're glad the tobacco industry saw it was fair, but it makes us think we could have asked for even a little more.

I think the industry gave in quite a bit. The [tobacco company] CEOs were very interested and very pressured into getting a settlement done. They were perfectly willing to pay the extra $60 billion if necessary.

We would not be surprised if this battle leads to some form of another settlement which could result in an even more ironclad partnership between the states and tobacco manufacturers.

We're going to either resolve them through some sort of settlement...or else we're going to just beat them, starting in Mississippi, then we'll go to the next state, ... It'll be a very unhappy experience for the tobacco companies.

I think it's just historical relationships in the area. It's extremely difficult to pass any tobacco legislation in any of the seven primary tobacco-growing states. Going up against the tobacco industry is serious, serious work.
