In 1998 east Germany contained 18 percent of the working population but produced only 9 percent of Gross National Product, only 6 percent of industrial production and supplied only 3 percent of the country's exports.

Today's figure highlights the fragility of the industrial outlook in France. French industrial activity isn't showing significant signs of improvement.
