en People are concerned about what happens to the national forest and to state trust land. But when it comes to their back yards, it's a whole different level of concern.

en The only way you can be concerned about being on a national level is when you've won a couple of state championships. Then you're thinking, how does your state compare to other people. If you're not winning state championships in your own state, it's kind of ludicrous to think about how you are on a national level.

en Put another way, the Forest Service has tried to cut down enough trees from the Kootenai National Forest to fill a convoy of 40,000 log trucks lined up end to end from Missoula to Billings without adequate environmental analysis of the impacts of this logging on approximately one fifth of all terrestrial species in the Kootenai National Forest that depend upon old growth habitat in whole or in part for their continuing viability.

en This is a concern. Over the years as the area has been growing, we have had a lot of people call us saying they're concerned because they know there is a family cemetery out there on a piece of land, and people are out there bulldozing because it is being developed.

en We are very skeptical this is going to be an adequate replacement. Lots of people have said the Forest Service needs to rebuild trust with the public. That's certainly true. But you know, I just don't know whether certification has really improved public acceptance of private land logging practices.

en I think I'm most surprised at the degree to which people are pessimistic about education and the extent to which they lack confidence and trust in state government in general. This is one of the reasons -- at the state level at least -- that people are reluctant to raise their own taxes.

en This just echoes what I've heard all over the state. State employees just don't trust the governor. They don't trust him with their pensions, they don't trust him to hire competent managers, they don't trust him with the state budget.

en We want to put an end to the pattern of abuse on the Kootenai National Forest that has resulted in decades of unsustainable logging practices that have harmed clean water, fish habitat, old-growth forest and old-growth dependent wildlife species. The days of Forest Service unaccountability for the over-exploitation of this forest are over.

en The Forest Service appears to be having an internal fire sale, with the heart of our national forests put out for bid on eBay. We may soon see the Weyerhaeuser National Forest patrolled by rent-a-rangers, overseen by private consultants.

en It caught everybody by surprise. As far as we know, none of the delegation members knew about it and we've heard from the national forest managers in Florida that they didn't know about it either. The bottom line is we are certainly opposed to selling off acreage in the Ocala National Forest ostensibly to raise revenue. The administration has raised a huge deficit. It is a $2.5 to $3 trillion budget and selling off acreage on lakes in the Ocala National Forest is not a solution to the budget crisis. The good thing is it is just a proposal so we will have the opportunity in Congress to have it debated and hopefully defeated.
