They're both quality pitchers. After that, we're not yet sure who we'll go with, but we're going to be throwing a lot of arms in the opening weekend.

We have about 10 pitchers so we can go pretty deep there. It will give us a chance to keep arms fresh. Sullivan had arm problems last year, but he is back and throwing well. We have six senior pitchers.

It's a delicate situation. Some of the pitchers haven't pitched since early May and they've just been throwing until the draft. They've got to get those arms ready to pitch again.

All of our pitchers have been throwing really well. We've been focusing on throwing strikes. That's what our pitchers have been doing, letting our defense make plays.

Too many pitchers, that's all, there are just too many pitchers Ten or twelve on a team. Don't see how any of them get enough work. Four starting pitchers and one relief man ought to be enough. Pitch 'em every three days and you'd find they'd get control and good, strong arms.

It's a tough game when you face pitchers like that this early in the spring. Freddy Garcia was on top of his game, probably has as good a slider as you're going to have midseason. Betancourt came in and was throwing real well. Rodriguez finished up. It's tough. It's (four) quality Major League pitchers and we got two hits. Tough to win games like that.

A movie doesn't open the opening weekend and then get burned -- they don't destroy it. It lasts. So what about Raging Bull ? Do you know how much that made opening weekend? No.

He was up with some pitches. He had been throwing quality strikes down. He was coming off some good outings. With young pitchers, the more you get out there, the better your track record.

Buck Showalter (1956-)

If she can be consistent and eventually get to the point where she can go seven innings if need be, it would be tremendous to have two pitchers capable of throwing against any team in the country. There aren't many teams better than the one she faced (last weekend).

It's a great problem to have [too many]. You can never have enough quality arms. You never know when somebody else might want one of your surplus arms. That could help your team out. Everybody is looking for good arms.

A pitcher can be the leader among the pitchers and be there for anyone who wants to approach him. But he is not that one guy who will go to a hitter and get in his face. Sometimes you need a leader and arms of that leader on the pitching staff, bullpen and the reserves. A position player can cross the line and doesn't mind going over to talk to the pitchers. But pitchers are kind of hesitant to go over to the offensive side of it.

We're feeling really good about ourselves, defensively, offensively and on the mound. We just need four quality starts from our pitchers. If we play defense behind them, our hitting will take care of itself. It'll be really scary how confident we will be if we win three or four games this weekend.

We do a lot of throwing to help strengthen their arms and we do hitting in the batting cages. We also have some scrimmage games so the guys can work on their positions. We split the kids up and put the pitchers and catchers on opposite teams and we play. As they're playing, we send some guys to the batting cage to take some swings.

I'm looking forward to having a good season with these guys and developing some quality Major League pitchers. I know we have some really good arms here. I am excited to work with them. They seem very excited.
