The fall weather has reduced fire danger in the Southeast Fire Centre allowing open burning restrictions to be rescinded,

If the fire index is low, during the summer and depending on the weather, fires are allowed, but if it's dangerous, we put out open fire bans. There is no open burning except with a permit that is given by a local fire chief, but any time you're burning on your own property a permit is needed any time of day.

The danger of the fire is reduced, but then we have the scene danger that we have to address, as the firefighters have to move around on the slick surfaces. So we deal with a lot of different issues with these weather conditions.

The siding of the cabin was metal and . . . they would light the stick on fire and use the blackened portion of it to write their names with. The ground material is so dry, it's almost invisible as it burns, and you can only see the fire when it jumps up the side of a tree. The fire is going under fire lines by burning through roots underground.

It was a very serious fire. Anytime you're burning hydrocarbons like this we're burning coal there's the potential for fire but it's not a common event.

They were surrounding (the original fire), attacking it, in every possible way, trying to get in there every possible way, ... Put the fire out as fast as they could so to avoid something like this. But, it must have been burning longer than they were aware of. There was probably more serious fire in the basement. It was visible as they began to get inside, and it just blew up without any warning.

We call it a potential critical fire danger stage. We extremely discourage any outside burning during a red flag.

The percentage is reduced each year, until after five years the fire department is able to continue on with paid staffing with it's own funding. At a time when volunteer fire departments across the nation are struggling to obtain new volunteers, this cut really hurts. It means fire departments will have to look to the public for even more support.

Officials closed this fire just in the nick of time. This is an amazing fire. It is just burning and raging.

Right now, the fire is contained. The wind has shifted and they've lit a backfire to get the fire burning back on itself.

Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.
