The beasts of the East have been eliminated, and that's good for baseball. I don't think you'll ever duplicate what the Red Sox and Yankees did, but I don't see a downside.

If Boston wins that division, and we do our job by beating the Yankees, it would be a tremendous thing. It means we're playing good baseball against a team that sets the standard for good baseball.

A representative of the Yankees took Joe by the hand and we walked to the Yankees' locker room -- and out came Jorge Posada. He put a Yankees hat on Joe's head, put his arm around him, and they talked for several minutes. He then got a baseball and signed it for Joe.

I'm a baseball man; you can't stay away from the game, ... It's a privilege and honor to be part of the staff with the New York Yankees. Working for Joe Torre and everybody in the Yankees organization should be an honor for anybody in baseball.

As much as we disliked the Yankees, fans and players alike, they were good for baseball. They consistently unsuccessful teams like the Browns, Senators, and A's paid a lot of their bills with those big crowds that poured through the gates when the Yankees came to town.

Bob Feller (1918-)

They went through the last two years something I wouldn't wish on anybody because of all their physical problems, ... That's an amazing job Mel did. Maybe the only job in baseball as complicated as managing the Yankees is being pitching coach for the Yankees.

We're not eliminated till we're eliminated. I just feel good about not being eliminated. We get to live another day.

Allen Iverson (1975-)

It has nothing to do anymore with beating the Yankees. We're trying to play good baseball and win a bunch of series.

What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected.

It's understandable, though. The owners have a lot of money invested in their teams, so they didn't want to take a chance on their players getting hurt or have their season disrupted. It's just a shame that such a popular sport has been eliminated. Hopefully, after that first Olympics without baseball (2012), they'll miss baseball and see that it was a mistake to drop it.

The Yankees had their reasons for not wanting me to play. Major League Baseball had its reasons for wanting me to play. But at the end of the day, what was important to me is to win a championship ring with the Yankees.

I never thought I could get a state title in baseball and somehow not get one in tennis. After the season ended, I thought, heck I'll end my baseball career with a state championship and go back to tennis and see if I can duplicate that.

Baseball fans west of New York City might hate the Yankees, but Yankee-hating is a good thing for the sport. Stadiums sell out, ratings go up and a team's own shortcomings can be blamed on someone else.

Pat Sajak (1946-)

I have a life besides baseball. This isn't my life. I play because I can. A lot of people say Milton Bradley is a good person. I'm trying to be a good person. But anybody who stands between me getting there, they need to be eliminated. Something needs to be done. I'm not going to revert to the person I was last year and in the past. I'm starting to get respect because I earned it.

I look at it this way, everybody wants to manage because it's the greatest job in baseball. But if you can't manage, being the bench coach of the Yankees is the best job in baseball.
