The first game was probably the best game we've played all year. We want our pitchers to go out with confidence and challenge hitters.

We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

We have to get better in the mental aspects of the game, ... That's true for both the pitchers and hitters. The pitchers can't be giving up hits on 0-2 counts like we have, and the hitters have to find a way to get the runner over when he's on second with no outs.

We played our best game of the year, and hit some balls out of the park which was good to see. It was a warm day and there was a little carry to the ball, and we got solid pitching and defense. I'm proud of Matt, he had a big day, and he's been through a lot to get to this point. All our hitters are swinging with a lot of confidence right now.

I like my friends to be the hitters. The pitchers, they all have the same brain as I do. The hitters see the game from a different perspective.

Jake did a phenomenal job. Got ahead of hitters, made them hit his pitches and our defense played very well behind him ? typical early-season game where pitchers are dominant. We were very fortunate to get this win.

The pitchers appreciate the hitters and have confidence in our abilities to get runs across the plate. Good pitching gives hitters the opportunity to win games.

This will be our second time to face South Carolina this season. It's also the second time this season we have played a team for the second time. They played with great emotion the last time we played each other. We got off to a good start early, but they were the better team that night. It was a six-point win for them, but they had us down 15 points at one point. This game will be a challenge for us. They have competitive kids and they totally out performed us. They beat us in every facet of the game. It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying. The challenge to our team is to take it one game to the next. Our last time against them is over. Our last home game is over.

I take a lot of pride in (not walking hitters). Early in the year, it was really getting me in trouble. That's not really my game. My game is throwing a lot of strikes. I think that's why I give up a lot of homers. I'm always around the plate, and hitters know they will get something to hit. But as long as I keep them to solo (homers), I usually don't get hurt.

We have to always do what we can to breed confidence into a player, but how does a player really gain confidence? It's being successful. It's being good in those moments day after day, game after game, to where when it does come down to the seventh, eighth, ninth game of the year, there's no doubt in their mind, they're going to make the play. It comes down to confidence.

He's (Smith) a good pitcher. We know he's one of the top three pitchers in the state. We know he's a competitor because of what he did to us in last year's state tournament. He worked ahead all game long. We just didn't adjust as hitters.

We told Vince going into that game that it represented his chance to play well in a big game. He accepted the challenge and got it done. By playing well in a big game, it definitely raises your confidence as a player.

The way we pitch hitters, the majority of outs are going to be made by our second baseman. But Shelly played an outstanding game. Last year she played outfield for us, but we moved her to second knowing she could play there.

Our hitters aren't very patient to begin with, and because of how slowly their pitchers worked, there was no flow to this game. I will say this - we did enough to win.

It definitely gives you confidence. Like last year and earlier this year, you're winning a game and losing one, and you go back and forth like a mediocre team. Finally, you're putting some wins together, and it gives you a lot of confidence going into your next game.
