There's a lot going on, and none of it really looks good for gas at the retail level. For the foreseeable future, I think prices are going to stay above average.

We won't see this level of growth continue too long, but we'll stay above double-digit growth for the foreseeable future.

A rise in oil prices stifles economic growth, ... There is a close correlation between gasoline prices and retail sales. Paying more per week for gas means less disposable income, which impacts retail and the purchasing power of the consumer, as does a higher average home heating bill due to the cost of fuel oil.

Crude oil prices that continued to stay below $65 a barrel this week, fueled by the warmer than normal winter weather across the U.S., have helped drive retail gasoline prices slightly lower. It remains to be seen however, if these relatively modest declines in retail gasoline prices will continue with the geo-political concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

I don't know that we'll see those high prices again for the foreseeable future, and we're into a sideways price trend now. Though prices are higher than in early 2003, they're definitely down to much more manageable levels.

The benign performance at the wholesale level may not necessarily wash through at the retail level. But there is no doubt that there is good news for U.S. consumers in the context of declining food and energy prices.
