en 'Where the Truth Lies' is a sophisticated and intelligently provocative film, ... The NC-17 rating will unfairly limit people's access to it because of the number of theaters in America which will not play an NC-17 rated film. This film stars some of the most talented actors in the movies today, is based on a popular mainstream novel and is written and directed by a filmmaker known for his artistic integrity and achievement. The film has not encountered this kind of restrictive rating anywhere else in the free world. Only in America will many be deprived of access to it.

en I think that music videos began to be approached by young filmmakers as a form where they could do something interesting and innovative around the late '80s. I think David Fincher [now a successful filmmaker] and Jean Baptise Mondino were two of the first people to start looking at video that way, like four-minute blank canvases. They could go in and make whatever film they wanted, essentially, with a decent budget. So it became like film school for some really talented guys. Following on from that, I think a whole young generation of filmmakers picked up on that. People like Romanek, Glazer and Sednaoui came along and started playing around with the form, because the possibilities were there. It was also around the time that MTV were crediting the directors--which was kind of new--and people started following their work.

en This is a stunning film both in its visuals and narrative. Guillermo is a master filmmaker and the ultimate film fan as well.

en It used to be that you had to have a lot of money to make a high quality film. Now, with digital video, anyone with a camera and a home computer can be a filmmaker.

en There are lots of different ways to make film. Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world. I don't believe there has to be any orthodox way to making movies, or any rules. It's what works for the filmmaker, and, theoretically, the audience.

en He is the ultimate independent filmmaker. His talent and his contributions to cinema make this year a true milestone for the Los Angeles Film Festival as a world-class event.

en The people are what always makes the film for me. My films are little portraits for me that make a much bigger portrait. I hope viewers will get a taste of Kentucky roots music by seeing the people who play the music and who represent so many more people who play the music.

en I'm real happy with the comeback. We got way off and a lot of it is my fault. You know, I asked the guys to make some adjustments on the car and it was totally going the wrong direction.

en I think a lot of people didn't really know what the film was about. This is not a political film. At the end of the day, it's about people living in a time of transition. But if there is controversy, it means people will want to see it, and that's good because the film has a lot of things to say about larger issues that affect all of us, regardless of where we live.

en We haven't had a lot of 3 or 4 days off so far. It's a good opportunity to get some rest and comeback with plenty of energy and determination. I think it's going to be a good thing and we'll be ready to go when we return to practice.

en My fondest hope is that "Roots" may start black, white, brown, red, yellow people digging back for their own roots. Man, that would make me feel 90 feet tall.
