The market is behaving as is we are going into a recession. Retail sales were off and so the market is worrying that the consumer is tapped out. IBM's earnings were off and so we're worried that the earnings will slow.

The market needs to let earnings catch up -- wait until we get closer to the year 2000, when we can feel comfortable that the market is not overvalued. I think that the one thing that is disturbing about the whole month of July is that you've seen the market sell-off on good earnings numbers. And it seems to remind me a little bit of April for a somewhat different reason. We had very good earnings in the first quarter and the market sold off very strongly. We're starting to see the same pattern in July. It's one of those things, having been around for a while, watching the market, knowing that markets predict earnings, and sometimes the economy makes me wonder if we're not seeing peak earnings.

Retail sales numbers were stronger than expected, and that shows that consumer are still spending, and I think that is weighing on the market today and it should. But it's not weighing on the Nasdaq, where you're seeing those really good earnings reports. People really regard tech as the place to make money.

It's a busy week in terms if earnings with three sectors of the technology sector reporting. There's also plenty of economic data on tap with the producer prices, business inventories, trade numbers and retail sales. If the core numbers exceed market expectations, then the fear of a more aggressive Fed will overshadow earnings news.

Instead of worrying about this quarter's earnings and the rate hike, let's look at 1998 now, ... Let's see what the kind of earnings we can have then. If there's no inflation in moderate growth, those numbers could come in very good, and the market can continue upwards.

This might be a time to be a little cautious.

I think the key in the market is technology, because what has been giving us this extraordinary earnings growth is spectacular earnings growth from a lot of tech companies. They are telling us the second half is going to be slower. So I think the broader market earnings trend is going to be not sharply down, but trending down.

I'm not bearish. I don't think we're going into a recession and I'm not worried about deflation ... But earnings growth should only be about 7 to 8 percent this year and guidance for earnings keeps coming down.

The market has focused on disappointing earnings or disappointing guidance about future earnings of just a handful of companies. When there's any hint that we're at the peak of earnings growth, the market gets pummeled.

What we're going through is a market finding itself in a very nervous state and is preparing itself for third-quarter earnings, ... As we wait for the earnings to come out, the market feels the weight of the continued carnage in 'new economy' stocks. Dell's announcement was certainly no help in reversing market psychology.

The retail sales report was the most significant piece of data we had in weeks and that certainly had the stock market going. It points to a solid first quarter, with earnings growth.
