New Orleans is an economic disaster. This tragedy is so unprecedented people could be out of work for three, six, nine months or longer.

We recognize that it's a very high number, ... But I guess part of introducing this package and doing it unified in our delegation is to say this is an unprecedented natural disaster, a national tragedy. And it's going to take an unprecedented response.

This requires all of us to take unprecedented actions, and to think in unprecedented ways about how we solve a natural disaster,

The Bay Area is not prepared for its next major disaster. The painful lessons that emerged from recent disasters in the United States drive our passion to protect the Bay Area. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina revealed the unthinkable cost in terms of lives and money of haphazard planning and irresolute leadership. Not putting ferries on the Bay for disaster recovery is like New Orleans not strengthening its levees, knowing a hurricane was coming. The threats to the Bay Area are well known and we must act urgently to avoid repeating this tragedy.

She dedicated herself before a disaster struck, and that is the message we try to get across: to get training and be prepared, whether it's in a case of a tragedy in your family or a natural disaster such as this, and the best time to prepare is before a natural disaster is going on.

During the past week, we have all anguished over the suffering that Hurricane Katrina has brought on in the Gulf Coast, and particularly New Orleans. There are countless thousands of families who have lost everything as a result of this natural disaster. In an unprecedented crisis like this, it is more important than ever that relief agencies, like the Red Cross, have the resources they need to undertake this massive effort.

The flooding in New Orleans represents what might be a new chapter in our history, ... The enormity of what we've seen is unprecedented, even fascinating to a degree. We may wind up seeing a lot of disassociation as we work through it.

Although our reliance on foreign savings and production are widely known, and most economists accept the fact that a real economic disaster would ensue should foreigners discontinue such subsidies, dump their hoards of U.S. treasuries, and refuse to exchange real goods for paper dollars. However, rather than perusing policies to rebalance our economy, we simply do nothing, and hope that day of reckoning never arrives. However, just as that strategy backfired in New Orleans , so, too, will it for America as a whole.

We in New Orleans are a people of faith, ... What if this tragedy should push ourselves to a greater good.
