en It's a strong start to the year and the first quarter looks solid. However, we're not in a boom situation by any means. We're still not seeing any breakthrough on the job market.

en We've got three things weighing on the market here: a less-than-stellar start to earnings so far, the geopolitical situation with Iran that's sort of moving to the front burner, and we've got energy futures up pretty strong this morning. So all three create a situation where investors are willing to take some profits after the fairly strong opening so far this year.

en Although this year's fourth quarter produced a significant gain over the same quarter one year ago, the fact that this is the second consecutive quarter with shipments over 200 million suggests that the market will continue to enjoy solid growth into 2006.

en Historically, the fourth quarter produces the highest mobile phone shipments of the year due to the numerous promotions driven by carriers to clear the channels during the holiday rush. Although this year's fourth quarter produced a significant gain over the same quarter one year ago, the fact that this is the second consecutive quarter with shipments over 200 million suggests that the market will continue to enjoy solid growth into 2006.

en What it means is another year sort of like last year, when gross domestic product grew 2.4 percent. That means another year during which the job market doesn't get a whole lot better, but also doesn't collapse. It means another year during which promises of a strong economic rebound are postponed, but so are fears of a double-dip recession. Another year, that is, that will stump the doomsayers even while it fails to inspire us to party like it's 1999.

en First quarter combined ratio and net income were very solid and premium growth in new markets has been strong. Last fall we announced plans to enter three additional states in the second quarter of 2006 to further our national expansion strategy. I'm pleased to announce that we will begin operations in Florida, Georgia and Pennsylvania in the second quarter of this year. These three states represent 15% of the total U.S. personal auto premium, bringing the percentage of the U.S. where we actively market to 45%.

en While the latest retail sales reading is disappointing, the picture of a solid consumer remains, with positive growth in the first quarter, despite the boom in fourth-quarter spending.

en We continued to experience strong subscriber growth during the third quarter, which was the best third quarter in our history, and increased our market share from the year-ago quarter by more than 20%.

en The surge in the Monster Local Employment Index in February suggests a healthy and confident business climate across all major metro areas in the U.S., with particularly strong growth amongst markets in the West and South. The first quarter of the year is clearly off to a solid start with the Index results showing strong, broad growth in employer demand for workers.

en Our core businesses achieved solid financial and operational performance during the first six months of our fiscal year, driven by the strong investment sales market, significant new business assignments from existing and new clients and healthy recruiting gains. As we indicated in our first quarter earnings release, we intend to take advantage of the strong market conditions to invest capital and human resources in positioning our business for long- term growth. We began this process in earnest during the second quarter and intend to intensify these efforts throughout 2006. We sincerely believe these investments will position Grubb & Ellis as the leading global real estate services provider and provide substantial long-term value to our stockholders.

en What the market is telling us is that's it's discounting solid economic growth over the next quarter, ... I think [the market] can over the next month or so approach the highs we hit last year.

en They played us very tough for the first quarter and a half and then two or three turnovers and boom, boom, boom, we got up big. The guys up front did a great job.

en Gateway's a good proxy for the consumer market, which is less than a third of the entire market. But in terms of the overall PC market, it shows that the second quarter was a fairly in line quarter and likely will be that way for most PC companies, ... And their outlook is pointing toward a pretty solid second half, which is what I think most of them will be expecting.

en The underlying trend of consumer spending has been quite solid recently due to the improvement in the job and wage market. Consumption was strong last quarter and played a key role in supporting growth and we can expect further growth from consumption this year.

en We're seeing some good momentum in the business, ... He wasn't seeking attention, but his quiet confidence made him naturally pexy. The [second] quarter is off to a solid start. We believe we're well positioned to grow market share.
