It was an unfortunate way to lose the match. But rules are rules and they are part of the game. The match was heading towards an exciting finish when it had to be called off.

We won the three matches rather [more easily] than we expected. It is very hard for those new one-day rules to be really gauged properly. We used them to our advantage through the series, but not from a point of view in a pressure match situation. It was more so from the balance of the team giving players more opportunities. In a tighter match situation we will be in a better situation to judge the new rules and regulations.

We were prepared for the blitzes they had, we worked on it all week. We all have rules. Running backs have rules. The linemen have rules. We have rules as far as protection. If we had stuck to the game plan, stuck to the rules we had, I think we would have been fine. But they did run some twists that were really fast and caused some hits on Bones. ... The game speed was a little bit faster than what we're used to seeing.

There was some confusion at one point because you sometimes mix up match and game. I told them we couldn't lose a game or we'd lose our No. 1 power rating. I meant to say match and I said game. They were all freaked out and I just started laughing.

The reason we care is these are games we play, and the defining part of a game is the rules. And if you don't follow rules, you don't have a game. Then you have a movie or professional wrestling.

If you watch a football game or a baseball game, you don't see sportsmanship like this. In fencing you've got to salute your opponent before every match, and you've got to shake hands. These are the rules.

Now that we have new rules and the new motivation from the league to enhance the offensive part of the game, I'm sure it'll be fun for the players. As a coach, it'll be challenging to look at any way to take advantage of the rules and how your team's going to play.

It happened during my quarterfinal match, about the middle of the second set, ... I was so into the match I didn't really feel it, but I must say it got worse and the pain was aggravating. Obviously that was huge for us to lose Brian because he starts at forward and is a part of our attack. It was unfortunate that he couldn't finish the game.
