Or have We given them a book before it so that they hold fast to it? / Nay! they say: We found our fathers on a course, and surely we are guided by their footsteps.

And thus, We did not send before you any warner in a town, but those who led easy lives in it said: Surely we found our fathers on a course, and surely we are followers of their footsteps.

Surely they found their fathers going astray, / So in their footsteps they are being hastened on.

Then there came after them an evil posterity who inherited the Book, taking only the frail good of this low life and saying: It will be forgiven us. And if the like good came to them, they would take it (too). Was not a promise taken from them in the Book that they would not speak anything about Allah but the truth, and they have read what is in it; and the abode of the hereafter is better for those who guard (against evil). Do you not then understand? / And (as for) those who hold fast by the Book and keep up prayer, surely We do not waste the reward of the right doers. (The warner) said: What! even if I bring to you a better guide than that on which you found your fathers? They said: Surely we are unbelievers in that with which you are sent.

We were inspired to write the book because both of our fathers were in the war. Mine was in the Army Air Forces and my husband's was in the Navy. They never talked about their experiences which made us very curious. My husband later found letters from his father about seeing movies during the war and many were ones we had seen as well. The book was a way of finding out about a time that fascinated us.

Therefore hold fast to that which has been revealed to you; surely you are on the right path.

And We will remove whatever of ill-feeling is in their breasts; the rivers shall flow beneath them and they shall say: All praise is due to Allah Who guided us to this, and we would not have found the way had it not been that Allah had guided us; certainly the apostles of our Lord brought the truth; and it shall be cried out to them that this is the garden of which you are made heirs for what you did.

And thus did We reveal to you an inspired book by Our command. You did not know what the Book was, nor (what) the faith (was), but We made it a light, guiding thereby whom We please of Our servants; and most surely you show the way to the right path: / The path of Allah, Whose is whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth; now surely to Allah do all affairs eventually come.

Hold fast to the Bible. . . . To the influence of this Book we are indebted for all the progress made in true civilization and to this we must look as our guide in the future.
