The Museum of Photographic Arts is delighted to share this important and powerful exhibition with our friends at the San Diego Museum of Art. Our collaboration makes us both stronger and more vital.

And the greatest praise to India is this: not only are her people beautiful; not only are her daily life and cult beautiful; but, in the midst of the utilitarian, humanitarian, dogmatic world of the present day, she keeps on proclaiming the outstanding value of Beauty for the sake of Beauty, through her very conception of Godhead, of religion and of life.


en This exhibition has been many years in the making and we are pleased to present this beautiful and stimulating body of work to a broad national audience. Looking at all of the photographs in the exhibition, I am still struck by the diversity of artistic expressions to the form, atmosphere and symbolism of the garden.

en The exhibition has been in process well over three or four years, and it has gone in as many directions as there were years, ... It is far less didactic and representational than the title would imply. It is far more experiential in dealing with visual phenomena, and that's really what connects it to Los Angeles. You will see a number of younger people in the exhibition who owe a significant debt to the experiments of the Light and Space artists in the late '60s. People don't write about it now, but at the time it was very much associated with altered states of consciousness, with drug culture, expanded time. In an odd way, it does come around.

en He was extremely talented, but in a different way. His images are very vivid. He used empty space in an extremely artistic way. He was not so much looking at the history of art. He looked at the images of movies and advertising. He was not looking backwards, but he was always looking at the present in a way nobody had done before.

en This exhibition will be a good start for future cooperating between the Palace Museum and the Shanghai Museum. We will have a series of other exhibitions because the Palace Museum is like a magical precious depository.

en In school he drew and painted and took art classes, and he was one of the better students. I assumed that would be the path that he followed. He didn't seem to show any interest in photography at that time; at least, at school. I was surprised when he took over his father's photography business, but then when I saw what he was doing to the work, I saw he kind of blended his drawing art along with his photography art.

en Open for only six months, with the exhibition development program still under way, the balloon museum already offers a fuller and more complete coverage of its subject than any other American museum.

en Not having a spring exhibition (in 2005) was a big deal. I'm pleased we kept as much (of the numbers) as we did. What drives a museum is having new things. That's the single most important thing I've learned as director of a museum.

en It's extremely important for U.S. history students to see what came from the Sputnik days of the late 1950s to the present and say, 40 to 50 years from now, where are we going to be in space?' and these students will be part of that.

en Compared to the lounge space in the present CSC, the space in the prospective CSC is very awkwardly spaced apart. I don't think the majority of students will take advantage of the two lounge areas on the top floor of the building, as they are just out of the way.

en In some photographs the essence of light and space dominate; in others, the substance of rock and wood, and the luminous insistence of growing things...It is my intention to present-through the medium of photography-intuitive observations of the natural world which may have meaning to spectators...
