This is great news on the inflation front. It will be very difficult for the economy to generate any sustained rise in core inflation with unit labor costs showing such a high degree of restraint.

When energy costs stop falling, we may not be looking at such wonderful numbers, ... For now, the Fed can push inflation into the background. But when the economy is back up and running, they may want to revisit the 'inflation is licked' thing.

If (FOMC officials) want to see whether the excessive growth is actually showing through to inflation pressure, the place to look is labor costs.

The essence of the problem is that the war against inflation is over, ... Ever since 1979 the Fed was fighting a war against inflation, and you always knew which way you wanted the inflation rate to go over the long run -- down.

Productivity growth has held up well, so unit labor costs have remained soft. There's a strong correlation between a low unemployment rate and inflation. A business' increased costs are simply passed on to the consumer.

The maintaining of the rate reflects that there is not a dangerous core inflation pressure, while the advance in total inflation is due to international price increases in fuel and not due to strong (domestic) demand.

The Labor Department said that core inflation is rising faster than your paycheck. Through the first three months of this year overall inflation is up by 4.3%, last year the rate was 3.4%. Energy prices are up by 21.8% compared with 17.1% last year; core inflation, excluding food and energy, is up by 2.8% and March was the largest increase in all categories.

The Fed knows that the economy is in terrible shape and that they must bring down short-term rates to the level of inflation. If inflation keeps coming down, the Fed, to a certain extent, has to chase inflation.

There is concern that the continued high level of energy costs may lead to inflation in other sectors of the economy. Fear of inflation leads to higher mortgage rates, like the ones we see this week.

I think (Fed Chairman) Alan Greenspan has made it all but official, we'll get another rate cut in June, but my guess is a quarter point rate cut, principally because of what we're seeing on the inflation report. The CPI and PPI have been trending up over the last two years.

Over the past week, several high ranking Federal Reserve officials gave speeches indicating that inflation remains a non-event, ... One official even suggested the possibility that inflation might go even lower is more of an issue for the Fed at the moment. Consequently, the bond market rallied and this caused mortgage rates to fall.
