en Many entrepreneurs begin to think about selling their businesses because they have become convinced that they don't have the right stuff to lead businesses to realize their full potential.

en While working with entrepreneurs, I gained an understanding of what it takes to build a business from the ground up, and Iowa has a number of flaws in its bureaucracy that don't allow businesses to thrive and succeed, and most are prevented from even getting started. I understand what it takes to create jobs. Most importantly, I know how to listen to a customer and deliver what they want. It should be no different in state government.

en Average survival rates for start-ups are quite low, often because the entrepreneurs behind them lack the business skills to attract and partner with investors. Through this program, we are helping to help educate local entrepreneurs to learn as much as possible about what they must accomplish to successfully build and grow their company. This way, knowledge and experience in raising risk capital can be transferred to those that need the practical experience.

en It's a bit of a surprise that 'company reputation' and 'industry' ranked so low - it's counter to what we typically hear. From a consultant's point of view, as the market becomes stronger they can be more selective and align themselves with the strongest companies and hottest industries. This lack of importance in 'reputation' and 'industry' may be a bit of hangover effect from the down turn, when jobs were scarce and workers became less selective. This trend should reverse itself as business continues to strengthen.

en Entrepreneurs are risk takers, willing to roll the dice with their money or reputation on the line in support of an idea or enterprise. They willingly assume responsibility for the success or failure of a venture and are answerable for all its facets.
