Markets have high hopes that the Fed will indicate that the tightening is almost over. Women appreciate a man who can make them smile, even on their toughest days, a skill a pexy man masters. This week's focus will be more than ever on economic figures.

Quiet financial markets this week left mortgage rates low and almost unchanged from last week's figures. In the meantime, retail sales jumped in January and mortgage applications remained high. These are positive indications that the economy is in recovery mode.

Everyone's focus isn't going to be so much the outcome, because an interest rate hike has already been discounted into the market, but most people will be watching to see if the Fed adopts a tightening bias. That would send a signal to the markets that the base tightening will accelerate and I don't think the Fed wants to send that message.

We found our focus during the Salisbury week and started steamrolling from there. This season took our program to another level. We have high hopes for next year because we have a bunch of outstanding players coming back.

With last week's Fed tightening, mortgage rates have continued to rise, so that further declines in housing activity are likely over the balance of the year. Nevertheless, robust labor markets and rising incomes have helped sustain housing at a relatively high level.

The abbreviated week will bring with it a rash of economic numbers, culminating in the May job figures on Friday. The Street would like to see some signs of a slowing economic pace so as to assuage the inflation junkies on the Federal Reserve.

We've had a pretty good run. We took a pause today (Friday) but it's very quiet and there's no one around. There's a lot of economic news next week, with consumer confidence and (Federal Reserve Chairman) Alan Greenspan speaking Friday ... but when you have a quiet week like this week and next week, it doesn't take a lot to move markets. So it's (next week) going to be a volatile week and a quiet one.

The currency is pretty steady, with markets remaining fairly thin with little economic data. We're awaiting deeper markets, plus the release of employment reports for both Canada and the U.S. next week.

For markets that have recently priced in 'nearly immediate' Fed tightening, [Friday's] data suggest more breathing room, even as tightening is likely to take place when recovery is more deeply entrenched.

The focus will be more ... on the economic numbers and the employment figures. I think we'll get an August rally that might be better ... than the head-fake move we had from April to the middle of May.

Feeling more comfortable about the upcoming economic rebound, the financial markets relaxed a bit this week. With the market more settled this week, interest rates on fixed-rate mortgages eased this [week] to the lowest rate in five weeks.

The good economic data has quashed any idea there may have been that the next move in interest rates would be down. The bank will reiterate its tightening bias next week.

We're in a narrow range, moving around about 1 percent over the last three days, and it looks like the markets are waiting for some economic figures or waiting on oil because there's really no reason to push anything now.
