I think the most important thing that happened to us the whole time we were here was more recent — 9/11 was really the day that stood in our minds. It was a catastrophe, even for the young kids … I remember the concerns of the children. I think it kind of reflected how the parents felt. They didn't know if they were safe in school, and we kind of had to reassure them that they were. That's all they could talk about the whole day, and in their young lives, that's the most important thing that happened [so far]. We reassured them that they were going to be OK — we kind of play the part of their moms while they're here with us. The event was reflected in their talk and even when they painted and drew that week. They drew tall buildings.

A number of families who attended Eighth Street are back as parents and teachers now. It seems that it is very common amongst people coming home - Ashley and I are not unique in that regard. Our parents instilled in us a sense of connection when we were young. It's great to see our daughter go to our school and encounter that feeling of comfort and camaraderie, that feeling of home.

We had a party, a Father's Day party, going-away party and daughter's birthday party all wrapped up in one, ... He was great; the thing of it is he loves kids.

It probably hits him like a freight train, ... This was kind of a perfect situation for him. His wife ( Angela ) is from here. The kids are in school, kind of established, home, and then to move all the way to Toronto, that has to be difficult for anybody.

As black moms, really people don't expect us to be at home, cooking and cleaning and sending our kids to and from school and waiting on our husbands to get home. And some moms like me home-school in addition to doing all of that.

Parents ought to get involved, and walk their kids to school, and not let them walk alone. There were some concerned parents at a PTA meeting in Northeast El Paso (Wednesday night), but we told them that their kids are safe at school. The campuses are still the safest place for them.

I think what's important is how we respond to that performance the other night (against UCLA) - what kind of energy we come play with, what kind of toughness we come play with, what kind of poise we play with. Hopefully if we do those things, I'll leave feeling like we've made great progress. This is the kind of thing that just pumps some energy back into the school, I don't care if you're a sports fan or not. It's double nice, too. For the first tournament in the brand-new arena, we've got a home team playing. Wells Fargo Arena is going to be a home-field advantage for Des Moines Roosevelt.

Thank God Mooresville's got that soft rim. I noticed it all night. That thing kind of hit the front and kind of looked like a putt at the end where you think it's dead and then it just kind of drops.
